The rebuilding of any anatomical defects was a truly difficult skill, with surgeons manually shaping, modelling and placing bone cement, bone grafts or titanium meshes. - Titanium (which is the golden standard of Implants) which is compatible with the DLMS technology is more predictable and time effective. The alloys that are preferred for the fabrication of titanium implants are commercially Titanium alloy Ti6Al4V (Ti-64). By applying additive manufacturing, porous structures, or scaffold can be embedded in the implant.
- Titanium fusion implants can incorporate complex porous features.
- High-strength titanium alloys allow for inspection windows in the implant sidewalls for evaluation of implant integration with host tissue.
PEEK (though not widely used) is also a Bio-Compatible synthetic material that has many advantages in cranial repair surgery such as its strength, stiffness, chemical inertness and durability. PEEK as a polymer has an extremely low thermoconductivity, when compared to titanium and other metals. PEEK can be used for cranioplasty, and also in facial implants.
